Here is a bit of context. The lawmaker in the video is an elected member (MLA) of the Legislative Assembly of the province of New Brunswick, and not an MP in the Federal Parliament of Canada. Here is a bit of history regarding the Progressive Conservative label. The Conservative Party of Canada was the original name of the party at the federal level. The party changed it’s name to the Progressive Conservative Party at its national convention in Winnipeg in December 1942. This rebranding was an attempt to broaden the party's appeal following the Great Depression and the rise of the democratic socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) Party, which eventually became the social democratic New Democratic Party (NDP). The Conservative Party in the province of New Brunswick then also changed it's name to the Progressive Conservative Party in order to align with the name of the party at the federal level, as did the Conservative party in all the other provinces. In 2003 the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada merged with the right-wing Canadian Alliance Party to form the new Conservative Party of Canada, dropping the “Progressive” label. It's not too surprising. I'm a teacher out in Alberta and I'm 90% convinced the initial book ban ministerial order was AI written based on how vague and terrible it was. Had it gone through the proper channels (human fucking beings), someone would have gone "Hey, the language in this means that if people in the books are kissing... that falls under the umbrella of sexual acts... maybe we should rewrite this."
