Will Carney Win Over Europe Before Burnham Does?

As a Canadian who listens to the podcast, I wanted to offer an outside perspective because I genuinely feel for where the UK is right now and ai can’t resist being an armchair expert on the internet. Brexit was a self-inflicted wound, and Britain has been paying for it ever since through constant leadership changes, a damaged relationship with Europe, pressure from the US, and domestic politics where Farage somehow avoids much of the blame for something he spent years championing. From the outside, the UK feels increasingly isolated. The US is pushing from one direction, while the EU seems reluctant to reach out from the other. In Canada, things changed when we were hit hard by the US. Carney responded with a clear sense of purpose built around Canadian sovereignty, pride, rebuilding, and the idea that we could come out of this stronger. He also never pretended getting there would be painless. Canada is still deeply dependent on the US, so standing up for ourselves carries real costs. But there’s still a willingness to accept some of those costs rather than back down. That’s why some of the timidity I see in Britain can be frustrating. I think Burnham needs to stand for something and take this fight head-on. National pride was clearly part of what drove Brexit in the first place, so maybe the answer isn’t to dismiss that instinct, but to harness it and mould it into something more positive. Be clear about what Britain is, what it believes in, and what kind of future you’re trying to build. There will be pushback and there will be costs, but this feels like a moment for boldness rather than caution.
