During the 2008 global financial crisis, China increased its holdings of U.S. Treasury securities (lending money to the U.S. and 2009–2018: China became the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt) and sustained large-scale purchases, helping stabilize demand for U.S. government debt at a time of severe market stress.
