Okay I'm going to agree...and disagree. First, my background: BS & MS in Information Systems with a concentration in Information Security. I've worked in IT security for many years and I also teach in a Cybersecurity program. Things I agree with: 1. Cybersecurity is a specialized field. That's a major reason why there's simply not enough people to fill all of the open roles. 2. Having depth of knowledge vs breadth of knowledge is essential in cybersecurity. It's better to know a lot about one discipline in the field than it is to know a little about several disciplines in the field. 2) Getting a cyber degree will automatically get you a job. The first job is the hardest to get because no one wants to hire an inexperienced engineer. But you kind of glossed over the solution to that problem which is internships. An internship not only gives you hands-on experience, it also puts your resume in a select pile for that company if you do a good job. Think of it as networking with your future colleagues for 3 months (longer if you do a co-op). Treat it as an apprenticeship. 3) You need to know how systems work underneath the hood. You can't secure something if you don't know how it works. You can get that knowledge from a CS degree, but you can also get it from a Cyber degree, an IS degree, or an IT degree as long as the program is of good quality. Things I disagree with: 1) People can get pigeon holed in cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is a wide umbrella with a lot of disciplines underneath it. Yes, a BS in cybersecurity is generalized, but all BS degrees are. It's giving you an opportunity to explore several cybersecurity disciplines so you can find a specialization that suits you. Being a Network Security Engineer is very different from being an Asset Security Specialist. The key is to develop Pi shaped knowledge - know a little about most of the disciplines and develop depth of knowledge in two areas. Then you can be a unique expert. As the landscape changes as it often does in tech, you can learn a new discipline that complements one of your 2 deep knowledge subjects and pivot into an entirely new area under the umbrella. Last thing because I know this is long... You don't have to be super techie to work in cybersecurity. Some of my colleagues can't code but they can tell you every change to data protection regulations across several continents that have occurred in the last year. My point is there are several roads to the goal. Figure out what type of cyber work you want to do and then explore the different paths to that goal to find the route that suits you best.번역 보기
