That ritual or oath is actually called "Ayyappa Deeksha" of Lord Ayyappa which is a 41 day vratham in which a person should live 41 days with strict vegetarian diet without onion, garlic etc and They should wear only black dress without any footwear and alcoholism is strictly prohibited in that vratham. It is performed with strict mental and physical discipline and with full purity. It is done before embarking the pilgrimage journey to Sabrimala Temple. You may have seen Ram Charan Garu in the black outfit without any footwear for Example. It is the best practice if you actually want to reform totally into spiritual person.
