I'm a biochemist (the chemist you interviewed is not a biochemist, so it's actual health mechanisms aren't covered) and there is a huge nuanced idea you guys missed. this is a really good explanation in the video, HOWEVER, the reason it's dangerous is also the reason why your jacket cannot poison you or give you cancer. The process for making these jackets is the problem, the jacket itself CANNOT HURT YOU. The health issue is real and serious. Like really serious. It arises because the PFAS molecules look like phospholipids - the molecules that make up your cell's outer membrane. So your body sees molecules of ptfe and thinks "oh free phospholipid" and inserts it into your cell membranes. The PFAS molecule itself isn't reacting with anything, it just causes problems by being in the way. The molecule then interferes with all sorts of cell signaling and cell behavior. And because those C-F bonds are so impossible to break, they can't be broken down by anything in the body or nature, so they just get recycled over and over and build up, and only get eliminated by chance. Hence "forever chemicals" The problem with why the end product like your jacket and nonstick pans are utterly safe is inherent to that ultra strong C-F bond. that when those PFAS molecules are bonded into a polymer, those molecules become impossibly stuck to one another through their C-F bonds. And when even two PFAS molecules are boonded, they no longer look like a phospholipid, so your body can't do anything with them and because they're so nonreactive by design they don't do anything either, so they just pass through you harmlessly. So your jacket is literally harmless. As is your nonstick pan (unless you overheat the pan to beyond 500F without anything in the pan to absorb excess heat, which also ruins the pan immediately - that's how much energy it takes to break the C-F bonds) The real danger identified by the eu is the VERY few products that use individual molecules in an unpolymerised form - things like firefighting foam, carpet and PFAS hydrophobic sprays - and places where nonstick products are manufactured are where the damage is done. People working in those factories and drinking the water in the vicinity of them. But NEVER the finished polymer. The problem with that test that showed it can be absorbed through the skin is that it tested unpolymerised molecules (like a waterproofing spray). Not polymerized ones. (like a jacket). The former is the problem, the latter is not. So do not be worried about your jacket, chemically speaking it will never ever ever ever harm you. Nor your nonstick pan if you don't run it leaving it on a max burner with nothing in it. We need to stop using pfas/pfoa as much as possible because it is environmentally horrible and in specific situations very harmful to us, but it's important to also understand how the end product of the polymer is 100%, totally harmless to us, and you DO NOT NEED TO THROW OUT PRODUCTS YOU ALREADY OWN WITH PFAS.번역 보기
