What did Joseph Smith want more than anything ? Everything points to him wanting everyone to follow his orders, believe his lies, and regard him as a superhuman with supernatural abilities. If power was more important to him than money ? Then leading a treasure hunt would be immensely satisfying to his ego even without a significant financial incentive. Everyone around him is following his orders to the letter, toiling away, digging massive pointless holes exactly where he says, because they believe his lies, because he's persuaded them he's got superpowers. It's entirely true that his treasure hunting days were preparing him for his role as prophet. He was sharpening his abilities, learning how to use his charisma to get the people around him to believe everything he says without question and obey his commands.
