I love Orwell's essays and nonfiction!!! So underrated compared to his novels. That being said, Weir saying "I put no politics or social commentary into my stories" is weird when PHM is a climate change story. I get why people don't want to be seen as political, but it is a bit of a privileged position to try to escape the connotations of politics. Most people being affected by climate change now, like by higher rates of natural disasters or bad air quality, don't have that luxury of pretending that climate change isn't a political choice that governments are allowing to happen for corporate profits.번역 보기

I resisted the urge to immediately run to the comments by pointing out that Andy Weir's worldview becomes really obvious if you compare his novels to the Three Body Problem series of Cixin Liu. And you sort of address this, and so does zachreads in an earlier comment: Project Hail Mary reflects sort of the positive, optimistic American conception of ourselves and our place in the world, while Remembrance of the Earth's Past reflects the recent experience of China with the Century of Humiliation and the Cultural Revolution. And even though I think Liu is actively trying to be optimistic, it comes across as incredibly dark and cynical by American standards. Interestingly, CS Lewis argued that writers should write stories to entertain and that only inferior writers should write stories with a moral. And he has started on a number of occasions that he just started writing the Narnia books from his heart based on images he had in his head. And yet his critics persistently hold up Narnia as like the canonical example of a writer setting out to write books that moralize and doing it badly. Personally, I read the entire Narnia series in second grade without picking up on any of the Christian imagery, and in sixth grade and tenth grade without being bothered by it despite having been an atheist at the time. Because they are fantastic books (OK, three of them are fantastic, the other four are merely OK), whatever his joyless critics say. As for the Charles Dickens thing: I think Orwell's observation that when you can't understand what's wrong with the world, but you understand that something is wrong, "try to be decent to each other" is not nearly as shallow as a lot of educated people would assume is spot on.번역 보기

As a writer, my primary goal is to explore the human condition, which means depicting many worldviews honestly that I may not agree with. My morality is certainly in my work, but so are moral frameworks I don’t share. Dickens certainly had a moral point of view concerning the poor, but he was far more nuanced than he gets credit for.번역 보기
