It's harder to put into words, but I genuinely think the death of physical media is bad for friendships. I discovered so many amazing games because friends lent them to me, and I shared my favourites with them in return. Those simple acts of sharing helped strengthen our friendships, and interestingly, that's something supported by evolutionary psychology. Sharing resources and experiences has always been a way for humans to build trust and deepen social bonds. I remember way back in 2009 covering a story about Amazon deleting e-books from customers' Kindle devices. In that case, it was because the entity that published the books turned out to not actually have the right to do so. I remember thinking "Well, I guess I can see the point, but this does imply there's a future in which a platform can decide at any point to remove digital material a customer has otherwise paid for."
