Americans don't just do this at home. I was on a business trip in Yokohama when one of us noticed a girl, probably 2 or 3 years old, get separated from her family. He ran through the crowd after her and stopped her before she crossed a street. None of the locals stopped to help. When we caught up to him and heard the situation, our female manager picked up the girl and we all walked back to where we'd last seen her family, and waited.
