Americans don't just do this at home. I was on a business trip in Yokohama when one of us noticed a girl, probably 2 or 3 years old, get separated from her family. He ran through the crowd after her and stopped her before she crossed a street. None of the locals stopped to help. When we caught up to him and heard the situation, our female manager picked up the girl and we all walked back to where we'd last seen her family, and waited. A young man eventually ran to us, the girl held her arms out to him, and he took her. A few minutes later, her mom came back in tears and thanked us profusely. We replied that we were all parents, too, and were happy it turned out well. On another trip, I was in Germany, walking about town in the morning and noticing kids riding their bikes to school. One girl, probably 7 or 8, had her skirt caught in the chain of her bike and couldn't move. I stopped, removed the rear wheel (it had wing nuts, luckily), and freed her skirt.
