In California water, electricity, gas were originally tightly regulated corporation classed as utilities. Worked ok for decades, then regulators were captured and corrupted so today a regional electricity suppliers overcharge, take on debt, skip maintenance, burn entire towns with impunity. Only government ownership can work. And we should threaten executives with prison for the people and communities they exploited to actual death.번역 보기

I agree that the government should be in charge of basic universal services that the whole economy relies on. However, the politics involved poses two questions: - How do we keep these assets safe for the public in perpetuity? A sovereign wealth trust? - How do we ensure that they are always run as dynamic state-owned businesses, that invest their profits in developing their business, and just not as cash cows for the Treasury? The issues at Royal Mail and the Post Office were in part made possible because they were treated as government sinecures and cash cows for the Treasury. We need to ensure that the family silver can't be sold off a few years down the line. And that regulation needs to be effective.번역 보기
