They went to the center because they were all on the salami that shrunk. They just took a ride on your magic carpet. If you had built the salami from the center out, the overlap would have been opposite, and you would have less movement. A more effective method would be to stack the the slices, cut them in to strips, and then sprinkle them around. This will also give you more crispy edges on the salami.
