I take my bikes to this guy that runs a shop out of a little hole in the wall just around the corner from where I live and only works part time (it's his retirement gig). Best bike mechanic I've ever encountered in my decades of riding. He also charges half of what the "premium" shop charges and usually can get my bike back to me that day or no later than the next day. On top of that he genuinely cares about the people that come into his shop. Often, I can get a tune up before a race for the price of bringing him a coffee and sitting with him to chat for a few minutes while he works on the bike. Started wrenching on bikes in high school back in 1972. Over the years I worked in a number of shops, managed a number of shops, designed bikes for one of the leading bike manufacturers in the 1980's & 90's. Left the industry after that and came back to spin wrenches at a local shop when I retired a few years ago. I could understand why wages for a bike mechanic forty years ago might be lower, it wasn't as much of a high tech, high skill job when bikes were simpler. Now the situation is very different. Not only are the bikes and standards much more complex with hydraulic brakes, electronic shifting, electric motors, etc. But the technology is changing at an alarming rate. Just trying to keep up with the new technology that Shimano, SRAM, Bosch, and others are introducing every year would be a whole career in and of itself. But doing that while also having the tools and knowledge to service the previous generations of this technology, and keeping up with the demanding concerns of customers, can be overwhelming. And I see young people leaving the profession in droves.번역 보기
