The WBC is closer to the Rugby and Cricket's equivalent than it is to FIFA's World Cup.

Don't think the WBC will ever be the World Cup, but if it can own its most passionate slice of the pie (US, Japan, Caribbean Latin America), it can mean a ton anyway. Patriotism drives numbers.

Luckily as a Japanese Canadian I love baseball and soccer equally. Getting to enjoy both of these tournaments is a great joy
