The song is dedicated to his wife who he lost to cancer - and in short succession his brother died, as well. After all this he was about to give up singing completely - but his daughter asked him not to. Grönemeyer actually went to live in London for, I think, two years. He wrote the song - and a whole new album - during this time and also recorded it in London. After publishing the new album he went on tour with it. The concert in Gelsenkirchen at the Schalke 04 stadium I believe was the first concert of the tour - so if my information is right, you saw him here singing it for the first time in front of a paying audience.
