What frum misses in his analysis of US healthcare is how employers use healthcare as a cudgel to create job-lock, something he as an evangelist of free markets, should point out. I work in healthcare of all industries and I know dozens of people who stay in jobs that aren’t just terrible, but pay substantially less than others because the health insurance is so much better by the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. If you have a chronic disease and are stuck with an employer-based high-deductible plan, the results can be catastrophic. Whether the change away from employer-based healthcare is “incrementalist” or not, he and other conservatives need to understand how much of a blight it is on those who work jobs for a living. I have a major counterpoint to your argument Mr Frum. UnitedHealth Group had a net income of $12.06 billion on $447.6 billion in total revenue. So, what if this $12.6 B was actually put into healthcare rather than profit for shareholders, then Medicare for All makes sense.
