You guys did a good job with Part 1. I've got a couple of personal insights to share but first: the only outright error was the David Kennedy, 1969-71 Secretary of the Treasury, was "closer" in succession than Sec. Benson @ #5 vs. #9. You mentioned the fact that he was one of two original appointees that survived 8 years...the other one was the Postmaster General, so not quite at the same level. Personally, I was in the 3rd Grade with Beth Benson in 1953 when the Inauguration took place. On January 20th we all marched single file down 13th East, arms folded, to the Benson home to watch the event on their television (which was still a rare thing). In the 3rd grade hardly any of us knew what we were watching and I'm not sure we ever saw Sec. Benson on TV during the broadcast...nevertheless, memorable. Nobody was home since Elder Benson & Flora were both in Washington, of course. Fast-forward to 1964 and I was on my mission in the West-German Mission including Frankfurt. Elder Benson was appointed President of the European Mission and was headquartered on Bettinastraße in Frankfurt. Early on he interviewed all of the missionaries in the West-German Mission individually as part of spending an entire day with us in the Frankfurt chapel. Another memorable day. I should point out that Flora was NOT a wilting violet by any means and was really Elder Benson's comedy foil. Her stories about their relationship were hilarious and like talking to the funnest Grandma in the world. Being interviewed by President Benson was actually wonderful. He knew my uncle in Washington very well (a partner with Ernest Wilkinson in his law firm). Uncle Bob had served with J. W. Marriott in the Potomac Stake Presidency. I mentioned that relationship and President Benson responded warmly as if I were suddenly family. In 1964 Sherry Dew's biography was about 40 years away and I wanted to know more about our new European Mission President based on my admiration for him after spending the day with him (along with 250 of my closest friends). At that time there were "John F. Kennedy Haus" buildings in various cities which were essentially clones of Carnegie Free Libraries back home. They were full of the latest American books and periodicals. While perusing one in Marburg (the most German city I ever worked in) I found the book "Crossfire." I checked it out and read the first 50 pages or so which described how Elder Benson became Secretary Benson. Even at age 20 I found it very touching as he was at Clark's in Provo buying a new suit when the call came from Ike. He called President Wilkinson and arranged to use a room at the BYU Academy Building (virtually across the street) where he went, alone, and prayed for hours. Not receiving a strong impression one way or the other, he took the matter to David O. McKay who counseled him as you said early in your piece. Late in life it has become clear to me that any man that stands on principle with dignity will always be controversial. Politically correct was not a concept in the 1950's. I think Elder/Sec. Benson represented himself well and proudly (for a man who spoke against the evils of Pride) as both a Latter-day Saint and a Secretary of Agriculture. In that decade he could hardly have dreamt of more than having Dwight Eisenhower or Edward R. Murrow as charter members of his fan club....but, of course, I doubt he ever thought about that much.번역 보기

I am a convert from 1965. I absolutely loved President Benson. I was a canadian farmer. His policy made total sense to me. He felt a hand up not a Handout. Today everyone wants the handout which takes away the work ethics. His church teachings were amazing. Thank you for sharing this great mom.번역 보기

I suffer from all kinds of depressions and mental illnesses and low self esteem. My Korean wife and I (we have no children) ONE OF A KIND......A GROUP of one for 23 years...Yes it gets REAL LONELY at church.......hopeless at times,no friends. BUT WHEN I LISTEN TO THESE 2 I FEEL GOOD AND LIKE I BELONG as part of the Church. Thanks you 2 for that.번역 보기
