I don't know if what I'm about to say is correct. Some cultural students/professor might need to confirm this. From what I know, this whole thing about tongkrongan or nongkrong (the verb form of tongkrongan) is coded in our DNA. Our ancestors likes to do these kind of things. In the evenings they did many kinds of shows, theater, sing, basically artistic things. And they was doing that without bothering too much about time. Like let the time flies. The focus is in the sense of community, the togetherness. It's not without negative side effect actually, cuz it makes us quite too easy going and even too unserious sometimes where we should be serious번역 보기

The idea behind "allowing live music" in a cafe is to keep you stay longer, and spend more money. A cafe is also often rated based on the performances they invited. In smaller cafes, many young boys or musicians come to the spot and offer to play. This actually has been a tradition I guess, in places like Jogja, Bandung, and Jakarta. And not only in Cafes, you can enjoy watching street performers everywhere; in a bus, ferry ships, on the side walks, traffic lights, everywhere. One good example of a successful musician starting from being a street performer is Felix Irwan.번역 보기
