My great-uncle Harry was one of those at Dunkirk - and like many others, it was the end of his war. He was one of the lucky ones to survive, but only after waiting there, in the water, for what felt like an eternity. When he came home, at 24 and in fantastic physical shape, he was discharged, invalided out. They didn't do that unless you were 'shell-shocked' to the point of being unrecognisable, being totally unable to function in any way. He lived with his mum, until she died in 1966, and then he stayed in their house, completely unchanged since 1939 - no telephone, no toilet, never going upstairs, floorboards in the kitchen falling through. He lived in the front room. He did make a recovery in the 1950s, and he did work, because you had to (he actually worked in a munitions department at the local MOD place) but as time went on, the horrors returned, really, and in his seventies and early eighties he was again not well. When he died, the day before my birthday, he'd forgotten to mention that hidden in his wardrobe was a box full of live grenades from sixty years earlier... Harry loved a practical joke, and that might well have been just another one of his best! But I think often about him, and his experience at Dunkirk. When I saw the movie, I thought about him again, and all the others who were stranded on the beach, and in the water, like he was. But I thought mostly of him. Harry couldn't swim, you see.번역 보기

Re: Bromide in the Rations: The American version of this "urban combat myth" was that saltpeter was added to the C-Rations to reduce soldier's sex drive. Soldiers would claim that the white substance on top of canned meat was saltpeter residue, when it was in fact just fat. That myth persisted up until the 1980's and the introduction of MRE's.번역 보기
