Here you will find these historical recipes translated into modern directions. Like always please refer to the originals at the end of my video for further historical accuracy. What's the strangest "junk food" you've ever eaten? A double bacon cheeseburger with 2 Krispy Kremes instead of buns? Or is it deep fried rocky mountain oysters? Fried Onions with Parmesan Cheese (1802), The Art of Cookery This is the first published recipe for onion rings! Ingredients: 6 large sweet onions ½ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup heavy cream 3 large eggs 1¼ cups finely grated Parmesan cheese salt & pepper to taste Lard (or vegetable oil) for deep frying *Optional Mustard Butter Sauce ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted 1–2 teaspoons Dijon or prepared mustard (to taste) Peel the onions by slicing them into rounds about ½ inch thick. Separate the slices into rings. In a large bowl whisk together flour, cream, eggs, salt and pepper. Beat vigorously for about 10 minutes (or 2–3 minutes with a hand mixer) until smooth and slightly airy. Add the cheese. Coat the onion rings right before frying. Fry in at least 3 inches of hot oil until golden. Lift out one onion slice at a time with a fork and drain on a cloth before serving. Make the sauce by stirring mustard into melted butter until smooth. Dough Nuts (1803), The Frugal Housewife Ingredients: 4 cups of all-purpose flour ½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened ¼ cup of granulated sugar 2 tablespoons active dry yeast OR 1 cup of sourdough starter About 1½ cups warm milk (or warm water) Lard (preferred) or vegetable oil for frying In a large bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, sugar, and yeast. Gradually stir in the warm milk (or warm water), adding just enough to form a soft dough similar in consistency to bread dough. Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Because this contains yeast we must let it rise by placing the dough in a warm place for 1-2 hours. After this time punch down the dough and shape into small balls the size of small eggs. Allow to rise for another 10 minutes before frying in hot oil (350 degrees/175 c is the ideal oil temperature). The donuts are done when they are golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a cloth. While still warm toss with plain sugar, powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.번역 보기

What strikes me is how quiet these videos are. No TV or music blaring in the background, just the clinking of dishes and sizzling of hot oil. Not even the whirring of a hand mixer. Very soothing for the nervous system!번역 보기

Fried Onion slices go all the way back to Ancient Egypt. One of the oldest junk foods in existence.번역 보기
