I recently watched an interview with a Niger state governor discussing the tragic and avoidable deaths of 37 minors and artisanal miners following their arrest by federal agencies called civil defense for illegal mining. Despite the governor’s media appearance, the most critical questions remain completely unanswered. These young people do not operate in a vacuum. Who is supplying their equipment? Who is financing these illegal operations? Who is purchasing the mined product once it is extracted? The governor painted a picture of complete ignorance, choosing to focus solely on the casualties while ignoring the syndicates behind them. If a governor claims to be unaware of a massive law enforcement operation in his state, fine. But now that it has happened, where are the answers? How many influential sponsors or foreign actors whether local elites or foreign nationals, are funding these networks? Furthermore, this tragedy exposes a devastating socio-economic reality: children under the age of 17 are acting as primary breadwinners for entire households across Northern Nigeria. While some deny the growing poverty statistics, the proof is right here. Children who are far too young for the workforce are keeping families alive through hazardous, unskilled labor they have done for years. Instead of providing leadership, this APC governor hid behind administrative excuses, claiming he is only the "Chief Security Officer" on paper, the same governor who frequently boasts about federal allocations being quadrupled under President Bola Tinubu's administration. What makes this worse is the complete lack of basic governance: No real investigation: Law enforcement arrested these kids without tracing their backers. Contradictory claims: First, there were reports of chemical exposure, and suddenly the governor turned investigator, speculating on television without definitive reports. Zero actionable intelligence: Days after the event, the state government could not even provide a preliminary report identifying the buying companies, the suspects, or a clear timeline of ongoing police and presidential inquiries. Broadcasted on national television, this display of incompetence signals to the international community, state actors, and insurgents alike that regulatory oversight is practically non-existent. This is a complete failure of leadership.
