The most shocking thing for me was that even the "fanciest store-bought pesto" is cutting corners with sunflower oil and cashews.

Just want to mention that most basil plants you buy are COMPLETELY overcrowded and actually hinder their own growth. Split them into a few pots and you'll get WAY more basil.

I find the best time to make homemade butter is after Christmas when they have over stocked on the cream. You can get it for pennies and they will be in date. Make the butter, wrap it in parchment paper and freeze it.
