Saving My ZOO From FLOODING… We Lost Animals !

A little background for those of you that are new here: those babies that didn’t make it were naturally hatched in the ground. I had no idea they were in there, we only keep adults in that enclosure as they will eat their babies and the babies are susceptible to being eaten by predators, we try to dig up as many nests as possible, but sometimes we don’t catch them, and when it rains after incubating in the ground for about 90 days, those babies will hatch out. I checked the pen every single day prior to the storm. It was perfectly sunny and was in the middle of a tour with some guests where we actually dug up a nest and found another baby in the pen about an hour and a half prior to the storm. We checked everywhere and didn’t find any more babies. Right as our tour was ending, the rain started and we had a terrible lightning storm. We had lightning striking a few times a minute. right outside of the property, we’ve also never seen a flood like this, so fast, only once during a tropical storm, but it wasn’t this bad. I also happen to live in South Florida and specifically where I live, you can’t dig 6 inches without hitting limestone rock. That limestone rock is extremely porous and helps very well with drainage compared to other parts of Florida. The rain was so bad and it all happened so fast that the pens had flooded, even if I had gone out in the terrible rain, it would’ve been near impossible to find those babies as they would have already been under the water. Going to be adding a French drain, so this doesn’t happen again. But even in South Florida, French drains can back up because of how much rain we can have in such short amount of time .
