Very odd terms.. AI engineering is not even standardized. I've seen AI Eng roles that look like ML eng, vice versa, ML eng roles that look more like applied science, vice versa. Titles will keep moving, it always behooves you understand the math and get a conceptual grounding around what you are doing. Anyone can write a PyTorch/TensorFlow/{insertLibHere} model nowadays. It's much more important to be able to understand the business you are solving for, the foundational building blocks of ML/Statistics/Classic AI/Control Theory/etc, where you do and do not need the complexity of deep learning, and be able to curate a notion of research taste from experience.
