The end, where you talk about them having the freedom to say no, it reminded me of a dog I had in my 20s. Real mean, definitely more on the wild scale. He'd been mistreated and abandoned. I had to work up to him trusting me to even get close to him. And it took weeks. Genuinely, I had no intention of even keeping him. It was about getting him healthy and to a vet. But me being who I am, I couldn't help but love him. The slow building of trust when I was bringing him food and water, him slowly approaching to get it. And yeah, he nipped at me a couple of times. I let things move at his pace. Thing is though, he never got used to many other humans. Me, my kid, and my sister, and my nephew. That's it. We could take him out and he'd be fine with us, but if anyone came into our house it was attack on sight. Maybe had I not helped him he'd have attacked someone, but I think he was too afraid to even leave the crawlspace of the empty house he was hiding in.
