The New Sense and Sensibility Trailer Is Romanticizing Marianne’s Biggest Mistake

It's been a minute since I read Sense & Sensibility, but I saw the trailer differently because it concludes with Marianne's self-deprecating admission that she "require[s] so much." I agree with much of the video's argument about her naīveté. I would just add that Marianne learns that she didn't require enough of Willoughby. She mistakes the spark for a flame, to borrow your metaphor, because she has such a superficial understanding of love and passion. Arguably, Colonel Brandon is precisely what she asks for: he burns for her and he relinquishes his grip on self-restraint to ask for her hand. (Elinor and Edward have their own path to sensibility, in one case, and sense in the other.) It's totally possible that the adaptation will not capture those nuances, but I hope the 2026 film will distinguish between her early fascination with the aesthetics of romance and her later appreciation for the consequences of self-abandonment, and for passion that honours her autonomy, consent, and sensibility with honesty and care.번역 보기

Your assessment of what a lot of people these days think of as 'real' love, is spot on, but it isn't love, it's just unbridled passion that easily leads to self destruction. And most unfortunately, many people, especially women, never learn their lesson these days, because that is how love is so often portrayed in modern 'romances'. And honestly, when I was in my early twenties (I'm almost 50 now), I also fell for it. Love has to be a raging, all-consuming wildfire, right? Well, no! Love is the fire in the hearth you come home to, that warms you up, gives you light, nurtures, nourishes and protects you, if you properly tend to it. What real love doesn't do, never ever, is burn or consume you! Been happily married to my wonderful hubby for 18 years, together 20, and yes, he is my hearth, my home, my heart.번역 보기
