EDIT: I actually forgot to mention this in the video, and I think it deserves its own discussion when I eventually make my full GOAT video. This is also a big reason why I personally have Jon Jones above Islam Makhachev when discussing the GOAT. My criteria for greatness aren't just wins, titles, or how dominant you are. I also care about how you use MMA to actually pursue the finish. That's why I rate fighters like Jones and Khabib so highly. Their wrestling wasn't just about holding someone down for the sake of control—it was a tool to create finishing opportunities. Jones has shown that throughout his career, and when he moved up to heavyweight, he submitted Ciryl Gane to win the belt and then stopped Stipe Miocic by strikes in his first defense. � UFC And that's also why, in my opinion, I still have Khabib above Islam. Islam is an incredible fighter and one of the most technically skilled grapplers we've ever seen, but I personally value the fighter who uses grappling to constantly work toward a finish more than someone who can maintain control without necessarily creating the same level of finishing threat. This isn't me saying Islam is bad or that wrestling is boring. Quite the opposite. Wrestling is one of the most important parts of MMA. I just believe wrestling should be a means to an end, not the end itself. Take someone down → attack the submission → force a scramble → take the back → attack the neck → lose the position → create another attack → ground-and-pound. THAT is what I want MMA to incentivize. That's also the philosophy behind my 60-second grappling rule from this video. I'm not trying to remove wrestling from MMA. I'm trying to make fighters use wrestling to create offense and work toward finishing the fight. Anyway, this is something I'll probably go much deeper into when I eventually make my full "Who is the MMA GOAT?" video.
