1:58 Woolz you also have to remember though that communities were much closer back in the day, people were also far more bored, and certainly payed more attention to their surroundings than a lot of modern people. So when someone showed up to a part of town that normally didn’t frequent that place, people were quicker to suspicion or far more curious about who you might be. In fact, even if you weren’t looking to do harm but someone happened to “perish” while you were in town, you’d probably be the primary suspect.번역 보기

Holmes confessed to 27 murders, though he later spun sensationalist stories claiming numbers as high as 133 or more than 200 while selling his story to the press. The physical building existed, but the "Murder Castle" as a high-tech labyrinth of death is largely a myth. The building was officially named the World's Fair Hotel, though it was known locally in the neighborhood as "The Castle." Holmes chose the name World's Fair Hotel to capitalize on the millions of tourists flooding into Chicago for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. However, because he never actually finished construction or furnished the upper floors, it never opened for business as a hotel and never hosted any World's Fair guests. The media only started calling it the "Murder Castle" after his arrest in 1895, when sensationalized tabloid newspapers began publishing fabricated stories about the building's layout. While tabloid journalism and Holmes's own fictionalized confessions claimed he used medieval torture devices and high-tech traps inside his "Murder Castle", modern forensic historians point to more grounded and opportunistic methods.. ------------------------------------- 1. Asphyxiation and Poisoning Holmes's most frequent method of murder was suffocation. He accomplished this in a few ways: • Overdoses: He frequently used lethal doses of chloroform or other poisons. • Gas lines: The "Castle" building did feature gas lines running into specific rooms. Instead of using them for lighting, Holmes would occasionally turn them on to asphyxiate or incapacitate victims sleeping inside. • The Vault: He trapped at least one verified victim, his mistress Emeline Cigrand, inside a large, airless bank vault on the second floor and left her to suffocate. ------------------------------------------ 2. Lethal Financial and Medical Scams Holmes targeted people who trusted him, often using his medical degree as a weapon: • The "Abortion" Scam: Several of his victims were women he was having affairs with, such as Julia Conner. When they became pregnant, Holmes offered to perform then-illegal abortion procedures. He used this setup to intentionally administer a fatal overdose of chloroform, kill them, and steal their life savings. • Insurance Fraud Murders: His only legally proven murder—his business partner, Benjamin Pitezel—was killed for a life insurance payout. Holmes knocked Pitezel unconscious with chloroform and then used benzene to set his body on fire, making it look like an accidental explosion. He later used suffocation to kill three of Pitezel’s children to cover his tracks. -------------------------------------------- 3. Profiting off the Skeletons As a former medical student from the University of Michigan, Holmes maintained connections to the medical community. After killing his victims, he frequently used his knowledge of anatomy to flesh and bleach their bodies into pristine skeletons. He then sold these anatomical skeletons to local medical schools and universities, who bought them with no questions asked to use for teaching purposes.번역 보기
