As a german who is a little bit interested in politics I'm realy impressed by Alastair Campbells profound insights in german politics, history and relations. Regarding the AfD, it is worth adding that Alice Weidel—with her background at BlackRock—is more or less a representative of the party's libertarian wing, which leans closer to American "tech bros" like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk; by contrast, Höcke tends to favor National Socialist ideas and currents. I use the term "National Socialist" in the literal sense: social programs for Germans (defined racially by ancestry) alongside the exclusion of large groups of immigrants. The right-wing faction surrounding Höcke, in particular, advocates a geopolitical strategy of a unified Eurasia, echoing the visions proclaimed by Dugin and Putin. This entails turning away from the American-influenced liberal system in favor of a nationally oriented, authoritarian alliance with Russia (with China in the background). Ultimately, it amounts to an alliance between an AfD-dominated Germany and Putin’s Russia. At this point, it is worth recalling the manifold ties between Germany and Russia—or the Soviet Union—during the 1920s and 1930s, a subject also addressed by Katja Hoyer.
