It almost feels as if the closed-off American music industry is afraid of losing its grip on the mainstream. They don’t seem willing to fully embrace BTS as a mainstream artist, yet they also can’t afford to ignore them because BTS brings so much attention to the awards show. So instead, they create an “Asian Pop” category as if it’s some generous gesture. The irony? Do they even realize how many American songwriters, producers, and musicians contributed to BTS’s latest album? To me, it’s hard not to see the irony.
