As an atmospheric scientist - now retired - I feel duty bound to comment on this discussion and correct some of the points made. Rory repeatedly referred to the UK being 1% of the problem. This demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the climate crisis. To be clear, climate change is driven by cumulative emissions not current emissions - depending on whether one includes exported (consumption-led) emissions, the UK is between the second and fifth biggest polluter of GHGs. In other words, we are far more responsible for the climate crisis than Rory implies. Secondly, on renewable energy, while no government has been honest about the cost of fully decarbonising electricity - battery and other storage is integral to this - neither have governments been upfront about the payback period which is in fact short because the marginal cost of renewable electricity is zero. Thirdly, while I can understand why Rory favours community led action on climate mitigation and resilience, it is only government intervention which can fix this problem st scale in time to avoid major climate and ecological tipping points. This is because most of our emissions are imposed on us by systems over which only government has control.번역 보기
