This is true that increasing the current in an LED reduces its efficiency, but also reducing its current. For most LEDs there is an optimum current where the LED is most efficient, and for a standard LED it's typically around 5 to 20mA. Also, with a high current, you not only reduce its efficiency you also reduce its life. The reason is that with a higher current, the crystal inside the LED warms up, and at a high enough temperature ions inside the crystal start migrating, from one side to the other. When a particular layer is too depleted where it originally was, the LED ceases to functions. For this typically LEDs gradually become less efficient with age. If you want to use an LED for a very long time, you reduce its current. For instance, if an LED is rated to 20mA, use it at 5mA (at room temperature), and it will likely outlast you.번역 보기
